Moving within 40 miles of your current residence is normally considered a local move.  Charges for local moving are usually based on an hourly rate. The hourly rate depends on the number of men and trucks necessary for a move.  aLocalVan Moving & Storage specializes in low-cost effective local moving. We achieve this by utilizing full-size 24’ - 28’ professional moving vans that are designed to move household goods. If a mover using a smaller truck, most often a converted rental truck, is unable to get all of your items on the truck you pay for the extra time (maybe an extra trip) or truck required to accomplish the move. Usually the larger the truck the faster the move-remember “Time is Money!”

Note that for a local move most movers are required to charge the customer for the actual hours worked (no matter what the original estimate was). For this reason you should always be cautious of underestimating moving times and you should never choose a mover based solely on the number of hours estimated.  Underestimating moves is a common ploy of some movers to capitalize on the “wishful thinking” of consumers. It often leads to disappointment, frustration, and regret on the part of the customer when the move exceeds the estimated hours. When you inquire about local moving estimates, make sure you give the estimator a detailed list of all items to be moved and make sure they have all the appropriate information regarding the loading and unloading conditions. Also, make sure to compare at least a few estimates not based on the hourly rates but rather on the overall listing/inventory with move conditions being considered.

As local moving charges are based upon time, there are steps that you can take to reduce the time, thus cost, of your move.  The single most important way to insure an efficient move is to be organized! Save money and avoid stress by being prepared when the movers arrive on moving day. When moving locally hourly charges are applied from the beginning of service (starting time) until the completion of service (ending time). Travel time is a charge based on either a flat fee in certain areas, or mileage. Every local move has travel time. Travel time for aLocalVan will be one hour (or a 1/2 hour each way) if your move is within the greater Louisville area. Also, Note that the time to drive from your old location to your new location is not travel time, but rather part of the move.  Please remember that we do not actually “clock” the travel time, but rather charge a standard time depending on what town(s) you are moving from and to.  Accessorial charges include packing materials, packing, over night holding etc. These charges, if applicable to the shipper, will be added.

Some helpful tips:

• If possible, you may want to consider moving a few items yourself. It can be a good idea to move plants, pictures, lamps, clocks, clothes, and electronic items prior to your local move.
• Disconnect stereo equipment, computers, and other electronic items.  Wrap and secure cords and wiring.
• Have your large appliances serviced and disconnected. (Your mover can help you with this detail..ask them in advance!)
• Make sure you tell your local mover about the access to your new residence. If the truck must be parked far from the residence it will impact the cost of your move.
• Dresser drawers can usually be left full of clothes. Articles in desks and end tables should be packed.
