Reputable moving companies will do everything possible to insure that there is no damage to your household possessions. Even with the best intentions, damage may occur. We suggest that every individual obtain liability protection on their household goods shipment. It is your responsibility to declare the amount of coverage.
There are usually several options of valuation protection offered by moving companies. The types of coverage and cost vary so be sure to ask the mover about coverage before you move so you are prepared for the extra cost. Valuation is not insurance. It is a limited carrier liability set by tariff. In the event of loss or damage caused by the carrier during the move, the movers’ maximum liability is determined by the value at which the goods are released and the coverage provided by the contract.
Most professional moving companies offer Valuation Coverage:
Minimal or Basic Liability: offered at no extra cost at aLocalVan, this coverage is based on the weight of the shipment and the individual item that is damaged. Usually liability is limited to $5,000.00 coverage based on 60 cents per pound per article.
Depreciated Coverage: Better than Minimal Liability, this option allows for claims to be settled on the actual value of the damaged item after subtracting for the age and/or depreciation of the item. This coverage usually allows for the repair of most damaged items.
Full Replacement Coverage: The best protection for your household goods. The settlement of a claim is based on the current value of the item if it can not be repaired properly. Some movers offer deductible options for replacement coverage. (Go to cost table)
